One of our favorite go-to sources when we're exploring the coast of Maine (as even a fair distance north and south of Maine)!

This 150-page book contains color photographs and descriptions of 3 common habitats along the coast (sand, cobbles, and salt marsh), approximately 50 species of plants, 10 seaweeds, 15 animals, and a lichen genus, plus an explanation of the causes of tides.

It's not a typical ID guide with just a brief description of each plant and animal. Rather, because the lead author has a long history of writing for the general audience, each article discusses the plant or animal in a conversational (and scientifically accurate) manner.

About the authors

• Ruth Gortner Grierson is the weekly nature columnist for the Mount Desert Islander, a weekly newspaper, as well as a freelance nature writer for more than 50 years. She has authored five natural history books including Wildlife Watching on Mount Desert Island, the home of Acadia National Park. She is a violin/fiddle performer and active participant in musical activities on Mount Desert Island, Maine.
• Thomas F. Vining has enjoyed a lifelong love of natural history. He is a former seasonal interpretive ranger at Acadia National Park and has earned a botany degree at the University of Maine in Orono.
